Salomon Speedcross 4 Review

Salomon Speedcross 4 Summary

The top trail running shoe on the market for a reason. The SpeedCross 4 has everything a serious trail runner wants. The only issues are the lack of waterproofing on this model, as it’s only water resistant (check out the GTX version if you like running through lakes), and the fact that the outsole will erode really quickly if you run on concrete. However, if you run on trails, or are even considering making the jump to trail running then this is probably the shoe for you.

What we think is good about the Salomon Speedcross 4

  • Amazing grip on muddy ground thanks to the sticky sole
  • Super comfortable on long runs thanks to its Ortholite insole
  • Offers great support for broken ground
  • Really well priced for the quality of the shoe.
  • Tonnes of colour-ways to choose from (though everyone always ends up picking the black, trust us we’re buyers)
  • People like the build quality and haven’t reported any majort issues with defects or breakages

What we don’t like about the Salomon Speedcross 4

  • Sole will wear out fast on concrete, which in fairness is because it’s designed for soft ground, but something to be aware of if you’re a road warrior
  • Some reviewers mentioned that it fits slightly small. We would recommend ordering 2 different pairs and returning one to make sure you get the right size.
  • Only water resistant, but that’s fine for most runs. If you need more, we would recommend the GTX version

Upper: Mid-Feather Construction

From Salomon: N/A

Our View:
We have no idea what Mid-Feather Construction is. It sounds like a designer went rogue and tried to get the silliest name possible through the process. What we do know is that the upper on the SpeedCross 4 fits snugly to your foot and should be able to stop branches and bracken from penetrating on harsher trail runs. It’s only water resistant, so if you run in super wet areas or for slightly longer, we would actually recommend the SpeedCross 4 GTX. But if you run in slightly hotter climates, or have particularly warm feet, the upper on the SpeedCross 4 does the job well. You might want to consider ordering 2 pairs and returning one though as other peoples reviews mentioned that it comes up slightly small.

Mid-Sole: EVA

From Salomon: N/A

Our View:
It’s EVA. Fairly standard on every high quality running shoe. Look, if Salomon can’t be bothered to write anything about it, neither can we. It is comfortable to run in, but we’re not sure if that’s because of the EVA or the Ortholite, but they work well together.

Out-Sole: Rubber

From Salomon: The Conta-Grip soles offer a combination of a sturdy grip and lightness. Developed in collaboration between Salomon engineers and athletes, the Conta-grip sole combines several types of rubber as well as different crampon profiles optimised for each discipline. Offering lasting hooks for all seasons, whether on dry or wet ground.

Our View:
The grip on this shoe is definitely amongst the best on the market. You won’t lose your footing on any muddy trails or in the back woods. It has deep enough lugs that traction should be guaranteed regardless of under-foot conditions. We’ve run up our fair share of trails and found the SpeedCross 4 to be able to deal with the conditions, be it raining or dry. A word of warning though, the rubber compound is super soft, so will erode quickly if you run regularly on tarmac. If you want a more hybrid shoe, you should check out the SpeedCross Vario. However, if you’re a trail maniac, the outsole has you covered. It’s the most impressive part of the shoe.

Inner: Ortholite

From Salomon: The Ortholite insole offers a long-lasting moisture removal and positive air circulation for a cooler foot. Made from OrthoLite foam and an EVA heel with a preformed arch. Additionally, it is particularly durable, robust being made from recycled tire rubber, to protect the environment.

Our View:
Ortholite is used in lots of shoes for a reason. It moulds to your foot to help you stay comfortable. It’s nice to see Salomon using a brand name rather than their own technology to guarantee comfort. Not a lot else to say here – it works as advertised.

Closure: Speed Laces

From Salomon: The minimalist Kevlar lacing system can be tightened in one single movement while being 4 times stronger than conventional laces. These laces are simple to tie, even with gloves or cold fingers. The toe cap has a flat form to avoids any attachments of plants, wood or other types of undergrowth.

Our View:
Why do laces need to be made of Kevlar? Yes we get that it sounds strong and like you could potentially avoid devastating injury if shot in a very specific place on your foot, but you don’t need bulletproof material for your shoe laces. However, Salomon were the people to invent the SpeedLace, and, despite how over the top the material is, you can be pretty sure it won’t break and will keep your shoes attached to your feet. We can’t say that it’s 4x stronger than a conventional lace, but it definitely won’t come untied. If it does, don’t shoot it.

What Salomon say about the shoe

In general (you can normally ignore this as no-one is going to say that their shoe is rubbish, but we want to make sure we give the brand’s view on the shoe for fairness):

Much more than a running shoe, the Speedcross 4 is the reference when runners look for a lightweight and aggressive grip, thanks to their long crampons on technical trails and soft ground. Water resistance will protect you against limited rainfall. The Quicklace system will allow you to quickly and easily tighten your laces without effort or knots. In addition, the Sensifit system perfectly surrounds your foot and offers a more precise and secure fit. Finally, its Wet Traction Contagrip outer sole is made of a soft, durable rubber that offers improved grip and sturdiness for a confident stride on wet surfaces.
